Pura Lempuyang Luhur is one of Bali's oldest and most sacred temples, and its candi bentar split gate frames Mount Agung across the valley. Arriving early gives the best light and the shortest queue for the photograph. The rest of the day is gentler: the fountains and koi pools of Tirta Gangga, built by the last Raja of Karangasem, lunch above the terraces, and the lake pavilions of Taman Ujung by the sea.

The wait for the gate photograph can be one to three hours, even early; the temple grounds are worth the time.
Mount Agung is often hidden by cloud after mid-morning, especially in the wet season.
Shoulders and knees must be covered; sarongs are provided.
The climb to the upper temples takes four to five hours and can be arranged instead.
Bring cash for small fees; there are few ATMs near Lempuyang.
